Located in the capital of Kent, Canterbury Cathedral is a must see if you are visiting the South East of England. Whilst it may not be as large as the others, it is the home of the Bishop of Canterbury, who is the leader of the Anglican church.
Originally founded in 547, it was rebuilt betwen 1070 and 1077. If you are a fan of the Tudors, you may know this as the location of the slaying of Thomas Becket, the archbishop who fell out of favour with Henry VIII. His death brought on a major revival of the church and subsequent expansion into the building that stands here today.
There is plenty to explore once inside the cathedral. It boasts a great cloister, chapter house, crypt, quire and water tower. Our favourites were the stunning stained glass windows that were much more vibrant than we had ever seen before. The window pictured below is often referred to as the ‘Disney’ window due to its bright blue and purple tones.
Oh my, some of these cathedrals are absolutely divine. We have nothing that even compares in Australia!
So many beautiful buildings. I slowly scrolled through your post in excitement. I’ve always wanted to visit England.

I totally agree that if you don’t go to a cathedral while you’re in England, you are completely missing out!
My partner is from Norfolk and there is a cathedral and castle there, I love going to them and exploring the history. We don’t have things that old in the US>

There are so many cathedrals worth visiting in England you shouldn’t miss them at all. I love that each one is preserved and taken care of. Each one has a story to tell.
When we went to tour Europe some years ago, visiting churches and cathedrals were always on our list! I would love to go back and just savor the beauty of these buildings!
There are just so many nice cathedrals in England. In addition to the ones you listed I also love the Norwich Cathedral and the cathedral at Windsor Castle (can’t remember the name). Thanks for sharing on #TheWeeklyPostcard.
Only knew (and have visited) two of these cathedrals. From your pictures, I know I have to stop by the other two one day. Well, I have to explore more of the entire country. #TheWeeklyPostcard
I’ve been to 2 of those! And I did manage to climb the stairs of St. Paul’s Cathedral which was amazing but by the time we got back down, my legs were shaking so badly we managed to plop down at a pub just down the road for the next couple of hours haha (btw, I think you might have an unfinished sentence about Lincoln being the third largest cathedral behind…. ?) 🙂 #TheWeeklyPostcard
Though we were in York, we didn’t make inside the cathedral. Can you imagine that?!
